Japanese indigo dyeing, known as "Japan blue," is a highly advanced technique not found anywhere else in the world, using indigo leaves, a plant of the Polygonaceae family, as the raw material, and the dye liquid is made using "sukumo," which is made by fermenting the leaves.
At IFUJI, we use only natural materials such as sukumo indigo, lye, and lime to dye our products using the "aidate" process, which extracts indigo pigment through fermentation. This allows us to dye our products in a transparent, vibrant indigo color that cannot be achieved with chemical indigo dyeing (chemical dyeing). IFUJI has been carrying out in-house indigo dyeing since 2024, and after repeated trial and error, we have finally achieved stable production and are now ready to begin sales.
Dyed products inevitably fade if left as is, so they need to be protected with paint. At IFUJI, we apply natural paint that prevents deterioration over time due to ultraviolet rays, and finish the product with natural water-based paint and wax.
The degree of dyeing with fermented indigo constantly changes depending on the activity of the bacteria that draws out the pigment. Therefore, we ask that you understand that there will be some degree of individual variation in color, and when placing your order, please look forward to seeing what color the finished product will be.

[Canterbury Community]
Founded in New Hampshire in 1792, it was one of the central Shaker communities and later became the headquarters of the religious order. It is famous for being one of the earliest adopters of modern technology such as the telephone and electricity, and for inventing the large washing machine. It was also enthusiastic about promoting industry, and was widely known for releasing "Shaker Brand" products, including wooden products. It continued to play a central role in the religious order for a long time, existing until the last sister passed away in 1992 at the age of 96. It was designated a historical heritage site in 1993 and is open to the public.
