past,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e Mingei (Japanese folk craft) furniture made in Matsumoto utilized similar coal-tar-based colorants derived from crude oil.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e It is said that antique British furniture,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e which served as a model for Mingei craft,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e naturally acquired a distinctive,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e rich amber tone over many years due to exposure to the tar and soot from coal and firewood burned for cooking and heating indoors.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e To recreate this aged look,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e craftspeople dissolved and applied tar to their furniture.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e However,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e as the harmful effects of tar became clear,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e its use was eventually discontinued.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-path-to-node=\"7\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eUnlike chemically extracted or synthetic substances,\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e the natural asphalt used by IFUJI contains no carcinogenic or
